Michael D. Mathis v. Northeast Mississippi Electric Power Association

Defendant claimed it fired its apprentice lineman, Mike Mathis, on the grounds he had been arrested on a charge of domestic violence, arising out of an altercation with the mother of one of his children. The jury found Mathis’ race was a cause of his discharge. The total compensatory damages were $388,000.00. In answering a special interrogatory, the jury found Defendant was liable for punitive damages but could not agree on an amount. Attorneys for Plaintiff were Jim Waide and Rachel M. Pierce. Attorneys for Defendant were Lawrence L. Little and Dion J. Shanley.
